The biggest company of the electric power sector in Latin America
Eletrobras is the leader of a system consisting of six subsidiary companies, six distribution companies, the Electric Power Research Center (Eletrobras Cepel) and Eletrobas Participações S.A. (Eletrobras Eletropar) and is also holder of 50% of the capital stock of Itaipu Binacional.
History
Eletrobras was created on June 11, 1962, in a solemn session of the Conselho Nacional de Águas e Energia Elétrica (Cnaee), in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of the president João Goulart.

Eletrobras is a mixed economy and open capital stock corporation, with shares traded at São Paulo, Madrid and New York Stock Exchange. The Brazilian federal government is the majority stockholder.
