Eletrobras is present nationwide. Its companies are responsible for 42,302 MW of the installed capacity of electric power generation in the country, which represents 36% of the total local capacity. There are 37 hydroelectric plants, 127 thermoelectric plants, two wind farms and two thermonuclear plants. Among the biggest and most important ones are: Tucuruí (8,370 MW), the Brazilian part of Itaipu Binational (7,000 MW), Paulo Afonso Complex (3,984 MW), Xingó (3,162 MW), Angra 1 and Angra 2 (2,007 MW), Serra da Mesa (1,275 MW), Furnas (1,226 MW) and Sobradinho (1,050 MW).
New plants
The participation of Eletrobras and its companies in new projects of electric power generation is also significant. For the plants that have been waiting for the beginning of their works since 2002, it has been granted the concession, in a partnership with private companies, of Foz do Chapecó hydroelectric plant (RS/SC), with 855 MW, of which start-up is estimated by 2010. From the new hydroelectric plants BID in December 2005, Eletrobras will build Simplício (RJ/MG), with 333.7 MW; Paulistas (GO/MG), with 52.5 MW; Passo São João (RS), with 77 MW; and, in partnership, Baguari plant (MG), with 140 MW, with the companies Neoenergia and Cemig, and Retiro Baixo plant (MG), with 82 MW, with Orteng. |  |
